So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word Psalm 119;142 |

Disappointed in love! Must the pain endure forever? Can the wound never be healed? One need not be bitter. To lose love itself would be more tragic than losing the loved-one. Yes! Conventional Wisdom is wrong that says, "Drown out the sorrow with liquor, drugs, wild pleasure. Get a new 'love'!" Don't let love be trivialized; you don't want a heart without it. Abraham Lincoln gave Mary Todd a gold ring inscribed, "Love is eternal!" The Bible says so, too: "Love is strong as death." It is God-given, God-planted. It's true, "Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." Don't invite Satan to harden the heart. The Savior knows how you feel; now you have something to sense in common with Him. There are legends (maybe true!) of Lincoln's undying love for Anne Rutledge. Edgar Lee Masters speaks for her: "Out of me unworthy and unknown /The vibrations of deathless music. /I am Ann Rutledge who sleeps beneath these weeds, /Beloved in life, . . . wedded to him, /Not through union, but through separation./ Bloom forever, O Republic, /From the dust of my bosom." The Bible agrees: "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it; if a man [woman?] would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned" (SS 8:6, 7). Lincoln's "charity for all" saved the Union. Anne Steele loved the man who would tomorrow be her husband; on its eve he was drowned. But her love sang on and on in her hymnal prayer: "O! let Thy grace inspire /My soul with strength divine; /Let every word and each desire /And all my days be Thine." Her pure, undying love has "bloomed forever" in the hearts of millions. A treasure! Bereavement is sad, divorce can be more excruciatingly painful. When the one loved marries another, then enters that tenth commandment where suddenly one feels that pure love has now been become sin. Receive God's forgiveness, but love still. Don't let "jealousy [become] cruel as the grave" (vs 6). Kneel down, now, before Jesus. He heals. Have you been blessed? We pray so!
